Luther Munakandafa scored his first for Basford as they stormed into the third qualifying round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win over step five Rugby Town.
Anthony Dwyer scored a first half penalty before Munakandafa’s first senior goal since his loan move from Notts County earlier this month.
The Ambers dominated throughout the first half and had more than a handful of opportunities on Matt Hill's goal.
Josh Barnes found Gregg Smith inside the area on a couple occasions, but the striker failed to hit the target with either of his headers.
Dwyer then had a great chance to find an opener, but his effort from just inside the area was fired straight at Town's 'keeper.
Clifford’s men finally got the goal they deserved when Loyiso Recci was ajudged to have handled inside the area.
Dwyer stepped up and slotted the ball past Hill - who guessed correctly - to make it 1-0 just before the half was brought to an end.
The Ambers continued to press after the break and wasted no time in doubling their lead.
A free-flowing move down the right saw Starkie lay on a plate for Munakandafa who calmly buried his strike with the second period only five minutes old.
It could have been three when a long ball over the top found Dwyer one-on-one with the keeper and he smashed a ferocious shot into the back of the net, but it was ruled out after Smith was deemed to have committed a foul in the build-up.
Rugby then had a couple of chances of their own in an otherwise disappointing showing.
First, a short free kick routine found Barry Fitzharris, but his shot from outside the area was drilled straight into the hands of Kieran Preston. Not long after, the visitors won another free kick mere inches outside of the Basford area, but it was fired high and wide.
In the dying moments of the tie, Smith tried his luck from the edge of the area with an ambitiously finessed effort, but it was plucked with ease by Hill.
However, the win was already sealed and United progressed into the third qualifying round of the FA Cup, with their opponents to be determined in Tuesday’s draw.
