Gainsborough Trinity vs Basford United| 01/02/2020| Kick-off 3:00PM

LAST TIME OUT

Basford United ran out 1-0 winners at home to Witton Albion. The game was a tight affair with very few chances at either end as there was no goals before the break. Just after the hour mark Basford scored what would be the winner when James Reid’s free-kick was glanced into the bottom corner by the head of Kane Richards.

A Nicky Walker hat-trick saw Gainsborough win 3-1 away to Atherton Collieries. Walker opened the scoring in the 18th minute and his 18-yard strike six minutes from the break gave his side a two-goal cushion at half time. Gaz Peet did pull a goal back five minutes from time but it was only a consolation as Peet restored Gainsborough’s three goal cushion and confirm the win.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS

When the two sides met earlier in the season Basford were 4-3 winners. Brad Gascoigne opened the scoring before Kane Richards’ first of the afternoon gave Basford a 2-0 lead at the break. Ross Hannah pulled one back for the Trinity but Basford almost instantly hit back through Richards to make it 3-1. Courey Grantham then extended that lead with just over 20 minutes of the game left to play. Myron Gibbons and Simon Russel both scored inside a ten-minute spell that set up a nervy finish but Basford held on for all three points.

THE BIG PICTURE

Basford United could move three points clear at the top of the table with a win, if South Shields drop points away to Stalybridge Celtic. They are also hoping to make it six straight wins and seven games unbeaten in the league.

A win could see Gainsborough Trinity move up two places if both Morpeth Town and Whitby Town lose their respective matches. They are also looking to extend their eight-match unbeaten run in the league and a win would make it four straight wins for the Trinity.
