Last season it took Basford 5 games to register a cumulative 3 points in the Evo-Stik South achieved today on opening day.

Defender Lewis Carr was one of several heroes netting a towering header on 70 minutes from James Reid's in swinging Corner to win the game and cap an excellent 2nd period for Basford. Earlier in the day Saul Deeney deserved great credit with a superb penalty save to deny Alex Steadman on 41 minutes. Deeney also made a brilliant 2nd half tip over to deny Belper,s Captain Eric Graves. However United though knocked on the door all through the second period and only denied by some heroic last ditch defending from the hosts, who put bodies on the line with some fabulous last-ditch tackles and clearances. James Reid who had an excellent 2nd period hit the bar & post and likewise Kieran Wells skimmed the bar as United pushed on. Liam Hearn who worked tirelessly in an impressive pairing with Kieran Wells looked certain to score from close range, but was denied by a brilliant last ditch intervention from Graves on the goal line.
Defensively not many clean sheets last season so the new found defensive resilience was clear for all too see as the United backline gave a top draw display.New signing Dom Roma,s provided excellent leadership supplemented by the very good Kieran Fenton and Lewis Carr as United sealed the win against our local Derbyshire neighbours.
Next up is the home opener Monday when Stocksbridge Park Steels come to Greenwich Avenue 7.45pm ko. With last seasons playoff outfit losing on opening day then it sets it up for a cracker Monday.
Basford Community 1sts kicked off there NSL season with a narrow defeat to Newark Flowserve 1-3 at Greenwich Avenue, the visitors are highly fancied for honours this season . The Young CFC side under new manager Michael Leslie gave a good display but Flowserve finishing was more clinical to take the points. Harry Wakefield netted CFCs goal via the penalty spot on 68 minutes to pull it back to 1-2 but the Visitors won the game as Elliott King netted two 1st half goals on 30 & 41 minutes, with an 82 minutes OG settling the encounter.
