In a game played in a good spirit and very close to call, it was United striker Joe Coxon who netted the decider on 55 minutes.
With Basford having the benefit of selecting from the 70 plus players who now form part of our Full time educational football scholarship program, administered in partnership with Central College . Then the feeling in our camp was we could give this a good go tonight. The Ilkeston program is the envy of local academies in the East Midlands and so tonight's victory ranks as nothing less than superb. And a mark of how far the meteoric rise of Basford United is progressing at all levels of the club.
Watched by the biggest crowd in all competitions this season at Greenwich Avenue, the Basford young lads adapted very well to an excellent game plan. Level at the break with little to choose between the 2 sides this all changed on 55 minutes as United went in front. A long ball over the top should have been dealt with by Ilkeston rearguard, however Joe Coxon kept his composure to race on to the delivery and coolly roll home past the Ilkeston keeper from the angle. With Ilkeston forced to go more offensive the United defence and showing by keeper Wood was immense. Centre half Robbie McNicholas typified magnificent spirit with a fine clearance off the line, after Wood did just enough to force a striker wide of goal in a one on one. Basford though looked dangerous on the counter and United midfield Josh Lee brought a brilliant tip over from Ilkeston keeper Roughton. With the game going into the latter stages a sequence of 3 dangerous Ilkeston corners were somehow defended, as keeper and defenders did everything possible to safeguard the slender advantage.
United still were very dangerous on the counter and Coxon should have buried at great cross from under the cross bar on 88 minutes, volleying over .Going into injury time United sub Parkin- Conndily was again denied by a flying save from Roughton. The save almost proved crucial as Ilkeston midfielder Goddard placed a free header inches wide deep in stoppage time. With the match official finally blowing after a good 10 minutes of stoppage time this signalled a superb victory.
United are rewarded with another home tie on the 6th Oct against the winner of Mickleover Sports/Retford Town.
Weds sees the football academy back in Football conference action with a visit from Chasetown 11am ko Greenwich Avenue.
