Josh Law says his U21 side are learning “more and more after each game” after an impressive 3-2 win away at Leicester Education Academy on Saturday morning.

Goals from Sam Newell and Lewis Rourke gave us a comfortable half-time lead before Nathanial Peters extended the lead from the penalty spot midway through the second half.

Late strikes from Allyes Bedar and Justin Fashinga gave the home side a chance of an unforeseen comeback, but we held on to secure our second win of the campaign and Law has highlighted the importance of managing the game until the very end.

“Every game is a lesson and we had a different lesson Wednesday. We want to win games, but it is about their development and game-by-game we can see it is vastly improving all the time.

“We made it very hard for ourselves in the second half with some poor decision making, but that’s what you expect with young lads. They are learning more and more after each game but I’m glad they’ve learnt how to win this game.

“Me and Wayne [Scott] asked the players at the end of the game for an overall consensus and they have all answered in the way we want them to. They all know the problems; they all know about game management and that is what we want to hear. We want them see where it went right or wrong and we want them to make those type of decisions.”

We began the game well on top and went ahead after only 14 minutes the impressive Rory Harrison found space through the middle before teeing up Newell who drove home a fierce effort past John Meadows from the edge of the area.

George Sharman was involved in our second of the morning eight minutes before the break when his long pass allowed Louis Nicholson to weigh up his options and his delightful cross was volleyed past Meadows by Lewis Rourke to double away advantage.

Newell and Rourke both shared chances either side of the interval before Nicholson was rashly hacked down by Meadows in the area just after the hour mark and Nathanial Peters calmly added a third.

A nervy final few minutes of the game saw Bedar pull one back for the hosts who otherwise offered very little before he had an effort ruled out for offside seven minutes before time.

Gianni Musson, hero of recent FA Youth Cup exploits, then denied Bedar with a fine save before Fashinga ensured a tight finish with Leicester Academy’s own penalty after Bedar was felled by Jordan Heywood but it proved fruitless as we moved to fifth in the table.

Whilst paying testament to their opponents, Law was full of praise for his side after the impressive outing.

He added: “We knew what Leicester were about and they had a good result at Loughborough last weekend, but we have played our game, we have got ahead early on, and we have ultimately seen the job out with a good three points.”
