TJ Nightingale nets a hat trick in todays victory

Chris Munroe11 Jan 2014 - 23:32

Basford Utd made it 6 victories on the bounce today with a hard fought 3-2 victory at home to Nostell MW today at Greenwich Avenue.

Striker TJ Nightingale capped a fine display with the 1st hat trick registered by a Basford player in a long long time. Jan 3rd last year and a Dan Jackson hat trick was the last time this feat has been acheived by a Basford player, so well done to TJ today and how United needed these goals. A bit of an after the lord mayors show after last weeks heroics v Tadcaster saw Basford come from behind to seal 3 just as important points.A slow slow start saw Basford go behind as the visitors gained the advantage as a vicious free kick was glanced perfectly into his own net by Theo Smith on 17 minutes. The goal seemed to do the trick for United as an immediate response saw the hosts draw level. Lee Hendrie playing in Ryan Whitehurst who saw a point blank effort saved by the Nostell keeper to fall perfectly for TJ to bag his 1st of the day.Basford had to wait until 55 minutes to gain the upper hand in the game. Lee Hendrie again was very influencial in the goal as the midfielder hit a beauty from 25 yards that smacked the cross bar, TJ kept his composure to head the rebound home for Basfords 1st advantage of the day. The striker then netted his best goal of the day with a great strike on 65 minutes to extend the advantage and set United up to win this one comfortably. This was,nt to be though as Basford missed some clear cut chances and gave the visitors a life line with 13 minutes to go. Looked little danger when Haytons let fly with aspeculative long range effort but it found its way into the net for 3-2.With the spirited visitors sensing a sniff United keeper Andy Fretwell had to make a world class save to keep the advantage and atone for his part in the goal. The visitors though made it a nervy last 10 minutes for United and very glad to hear the final whistle in this one and 3 good points today. Games like this earlier in the campaign might well have resulted in dropped points but not in the current period of form for the home side. United now have a 2 week break before the next NECL league game v Lincoln Moorlands but have an county cup quarter final on the horizon Tuesday with a visit to the north of the county, to play NECL Division 1 side Clipstone for the right to earn a semi final spot.
