The club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Alan, who was a very well-known season ticket holder at the club, and a renowned figurehead in youth football and cricket across Nottinghamshire.
Basford manager Steve Chettle, said: "I have known Alan McCarthy since I was a boy and playing grassroots football for Parkhead and Padstow in Bestwood, which was a filter team for Nottingham Forest.
“Alan was a keen cricketer and I also played for his cricket team, Camborne Cricket Club, along with his sons. He had a passion for football and attended Basford United matches as often as he could and I saw him and his wife, Iris, for the first time in a long while when I became First Team manager.
“He was still loving his football and will be sadly missed by everyone that knew him.”
Our love and condolences go out to all of Alan’s family from all members of the Basford United community.
Club Chairman, Chris Munroe, also shared his condolences.
“I am deeply saddened for Iris and the family, Alan was such a respected and welcome figure at the club.
“Personally, my path with Alan first crossed 40 years ago when playing for Parkhead under 16s under Mel Hackett but with Alan a significant figurehead for Parkhead, one of Nottingham’s renowned top youth setups, and one that was my clear vision for Basford United Community FC to mirror and become the number one set up in Nottingham.”
The club are deeply touched that the family have requested donations come too Basford United Community Football Club’s Youth set up. As a club our intention is, when the time is right, to honour Alan's commitment to Football with a plaque or a bench inside the main stadia.
Rest in Peace Alan a true gentleman.
