United’s final game of the season ended in defeat as Witton Albion ran out 4-0 winners at the U Lock It Stadium.
James Lawrie, Joe Mwasile and Cesaire Lingouba gave the hosts a commanding half-time lead before Isaac Baldwin added to the tally four minutes into the second period.
Albion hosted after they were relegated to step four following defeat at Warrington last time out but were in no mood to feel sorry for themselves as they closed the season on a high.
Starting brightly, Callum Saunders blazed well over after good work down the right, before a tame Lawrie hit was easy for Jordan Pierrepont, returning for the resting Kieran Preston.
Liam Hearn’s pulsating run down the left nearly put one of Callum Chettle, Lirak Hasani, and Courey Grantham in, though his pass was behind the onrushing trio, seconds prior to the opening goal.
Benefiting from time and space, Lawrie took aim from the edge of the area and thundered the first goal of the game beyond Pierrepont into the top corner.
Brad Gascoigne’s cute pass was inches from Jordan Helliwell – running from deep – and a decent spell of possession saw Chettle race through, but the swirling Northwich wind took it away from the midfielder.
The best chance for Mark Clifford’s men came when another encouraging move down the right allowed Grantham to strike low, matched by the strong hand of Greg Hall who saved smartly down to his right.
And it was as good as it got for the visitors as Mwasile came close to adding a second when Pierrepont denied him at point-blank range, before the ‘keeper again saved – this time with his legs – to block from Saunders.
Moments later, Mwasile did find his goal, as Albion fired home two in a matter of minutes.
Firstly, the former Morecambe and Salford City striker slotted home after a free-flowing move before a tame strike slipped through the fingers of Pierrepont, bobbling into the gaping net for a third.
Upbeat at the break, Witton continued to fire on all cylinders and added another through Baldwin’s low strike that crept into the far corner.
Little to report as a typical end of season feel descended on Cheshire. Lirak Hasani had a fine chance to pull one back on the hour after fine work by Declan Dunn, but a slice effort arrowed wide.
Ryan Wilson was then caught offside, on the end of a delicate Gascoigne pass before Saunders curled wide at the other end and Josh Wardle’s header was well-caught by Pierrepont.
