United came away from Greater Manchester empty-handed following a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Radcliffe on Saturday afternoon.
Bobby Grant put his side in front after 29 minutes with a wicked cross-cum-shot that took a deflection off Owen Betts before Max McMillan scrambled home from close range.
Former Stafford Rangers midfielder Luca Navarro then sealed the win with 11 minutes remaining with a composed finished.
Man of the match from successive weeks, Kieran Preston had to be at his sharpest to deny Grant at his near post after only two minutes.
The game settled, with both sides seizing one another ahead, and there were no real noteworthy attempts that further worried Preston, or Cameron Belford at the other end.
Just before the 20th minute, a Paddy Webb break down the left yielded a decent effort which deflected wide by full-back Ben Rydel on the stretch before an excellent cross from Grice travelled all the way across the 6-yard box and eventually cleared; a touch would have been enough.
And United’s best chance to go in front came seconds later.
Down the left, another Webb cross – similar to that of Grice – found an unmarked Courey Grantham 4-yards out. Left all alone, the striker looked destined to open his account for Basford only for the ball to cannon off his heel and away to safety.
A spell in the ascendancy was encouraging, though all promise was diminished when, down the right, Grant’s wicked cross deflected off Betts’ head to deceive Preston and ‘Boro led.
Late in the half, United had another decent chance of their own – this time to draw level – but whilst the combination between Ryan Wilson and Harvey Grice looked bright, the resultant corner was flapped at by Belford, hacked away and the opening 45 concluded.
Kane Richards was introduced at the break, and he looked lively. He was felled by Simon Lenighan and Wilson’s free-kick narrowly skimmed Belford’s left-hand post.
Pressure on the hour saw the hosts struggle to get out of their own half for a while, but a sucker punch came eight minutes later when the hosts doubled their advantage.
From range, Jack Baxter took aim and, wind-assisted, forced Preston to save and McMillan reacted first to prod the ball beyond the ‘keeper to the ecstasy of a bolstered home crowd.
A tempting cross from Mitchell Tait was headed wide by a defender’s head and Wilson’s corner clipped the top of the crossbar and a mass goalmouth scramble – that saw attempts from Callum Chettle, Richards and Betts all blocked – summed up United’s day.
Seconds later, Radcliffe added a third through Navarro after good work from substitute and former Notts County striker Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro down the right and Basford’s tough run of March fixtures continue with the visit of South Shields next weekend.
