Basford United fell 1-2 to Hyde United at Greenwich Avenue despite a promising second half showing.
The visitors took control in the first half following Brad Holmes’ smart opener, but a Rev James leveller almost straight after the restart gave the Ambers something to build on. It was the visitors who took maximum points however through Drew Baker’s header.
Both teams enjoyed a large amount of possession during the opening quarter but neither had nothing to show for it as both keepers got to enjoy a quiet starting period with nothing dangerous coming their way.
A flurry of chances came the way of the visitors however near the 20-minute mark as multiple yellow shirts blocked a barrage of close-range shots, before Callum Spooner’s effort was scrambled off the line. Matthew Fearnley then took aim from distance and Harvey Woodward had to make a fantastic safe to prevent the top-corner bound shot from opening the score.
The Tigers continued to be the larger threat as the Ambers struggled to get into the game, with shots from Spooner and Ben Kershaw again blocked on the line. A breakthrough finally came during a good move from the visitors as Fearnley slotted a ball to Holmes through the Basford defence, and the latter finished past Woodward at the near post in the 34th minute to give them the advantage they had been hunting for.
After the interval the Ambers got off to the perfect start as they looked to turn the game around. A corner caused panic in the box as the ball pinballed off players from both teams, but eventually, after Rhys Sharpe headed the ball towards James, the latter found space to smash home the equaliser off the crossbar to bring Basford level in the 46th minute.
Hyde began to be pinned into their own half as the Ambers looked for another to fully turn the game around, and Tyler Dacres came close twice with two similar efforts from outside the box that skimmed the outside of the post with Callum Hiddleston otherwise beaten.
After a long period without either team able to carve out anything dangerous, Hyde finally had a answer to all the Basford pressure as a dangerous corner once again saw the ball fly off several heads before falling to Baker, who made no mistake on the line to head Hyde back in front in the 71st minute.
The visitors followed this up by almost netting another, but Ayo Quadri’s close range header was straight at Woodward. It proved the last big chance of the game as the Tigers took home all three points.
