Pre-Season Preview: First Team and Under 21's Double Header

Harry Worgan21 Aug 2020 - 18:49

Basford United travel to Midland Football League Side Long Eaton United tomorrow for their third pre-season game.

It comes on the back of a 1-1 draw against a competitive Eastwood CFC side, where summer signing Niall Towle, who joined the club from Long Eaton, bagged his first goal in a Basford shirt.

This game represents Long Eaton’s fifth of pre-season, with them coming into it of the back of a 2-2 draw with Carlton Town.

Manager Steve Chettle is without players for the game due to minor injury issues but is looking forward to the game in what marks a “big week” for the club with fans returning to Greenwich Avenue from Tuesday. He said: “I’m looking forward to meeting up with Deaks and Swinny and playing against their new team.

“It’s a big week for us as we welcome fans back into the ground for pre-season games against Gedling Miners Welfare on Tuesday night and then National League side Alfreton Town next Saturday at Greenwich Avenue.

“We will hope to have everyone in the first team squad available to train next week as the current players on the injury list; Kane Richards, Callum Chettle, James Tague, Wayde Hines and Jordan Pierrepont should train with the group in the lead up to the Alfreton game.”

Tomorrow also marks the first game of Basford United’s under 21s side, coached by Josh Law and Wayne Scott, which will be made up of players from the club’s academy as they host Kidderminster Harriers under 23s.

And Chettle believes it is a good opportunity for the club’s young talents to progress. He said: “It will be a tough test against an older Kidderminster Harriers under 23s team. We know some of the players could be playing against players five or six years older than them but it will give them invaluable experience on the journey through the club and hopefully for some into the first team.

“As long as they try to do the things that we have worked on in training and give their maximum effort, that’s all we can ask for.”

The first teams game against Long Eaton is behind closed doors.
