Midfielders to bolster Chettle's squad...

Basford United is delighted to announce the signings of midfielders Terry Hawkridge and Reco Fyfe.

Hawkridge, 31, signs from Boston United for an undisclosed fee, whilst Fyfe, 24, arrives having most recently been at Gainsborough Trinity where he waived his previous contract agreement.

They will be readily available for today’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Stourbridge at Greenwich Avenue.

Fyfe started his career at Notts County and will be well known to Ilkeston Town fans after he was part of their title winning side and promotion from the Midland Football League back in 2019. He has also played for Radford.

After playing youth football for Barnsley and Tranmere Rovers, Hawkridge’s non-league career began at Gedling Miners Welfare, before moves to Carlton Town, Hucknall Town and Gainsborough preceded an enviable professional career.

He signed for League Two side Scunthorpe United in 2013, spending two years at Glanford Park, before joining Lincoln City under Danny Cowley, where they famously reached the fifth round of the FA Cup in 2017, losing 5-0 away at Arsenal.

Hawkridge scored both goals on his final appearance for the Imps as they were promoted to the Football League, and he subsequently joined Notts County before spells at National League level with Solihull Moors and Boston.

Both Nottingham-born, it’ll be a family reunion of sorts - as the two are cousins - and will enhance a central midfield area significantly depleted by injury.

Callum Chettle and Ollie Clark remain out long-term, whilst Matt Thornhill undergoes assessment on a recent head injury sustained at Grantham on Monday and has received stitches.

Academy youngsters Nathaniel Peters and Jordan Haywood have both impressed during the early stages of the league campaign, having featured heavily throughout pre-season.

Commenting, boss Steve Chettle said: “We’re delighted to welcome both Terry and Reco to Basford and both will go straight into the squad for this weekend's fixture against Stourbridge in the FA Cup.

“I worked with Terry during my time at Notts County with the first team and was a big part in the successful play-off season in League Two under Kevin Nolan.

“He also has massive Football League experience with Lincoln City and will bring a wealth of knowledge and skill to our group. He is raring to get started and already knows the majority of the first team squad, so will fit in perfectly.

“Reco joins us after playing at Gainsborough during the last season and with the changes there, he was looking for a new challenge.

“He is a creative attacking striker and has an eye for a goal. We have been hit with injuries in most areas of the pitch and with Callum and Ollie having to be patient in their return, we have brought in some real quality to bolster the group.”

Chairman and owner Chris Munroe added: “I am delighted to sanction these two excellent signings. I totally understand our unprecedented long-term predicament with regards to injuries, so it was needs must.

“Steve, our coaches and players has worked wonders to remain three unbeaten with so many injuries, but we have season objectives and it as absolutely crucial to support them at this time and hopefully start climbing the table.”

Elsewhere, the Club can also confirm that Niall Towle has begun a short-term loan spell at Corby Town.

The striker will join midfielder James Tague under Gary Mills on an initial one-month deal with a view to extend.
