We took our first win of the season as we beat Lancaster City 2-1.

Stef Galinski opened the scoring before Andy Teague levelled the score at the break. We then put in a stunning second half performance that saw us take the win thanks to Alex Howes’ first goal in a Basford shirt.

The opening minute saw Lancaster get the first chance of the afternoon but our number one Kieran Preston was more than equal to Jacob Gregory’s long-range effort. The game was then an equal affair with both sides struggling to fashion any real opportunities, again it was Lancaster who had the better chance. Lewis Carr failed to clear the ball and Preston had to race off his line to take the ball from the feet of Matthew Blinkhorn.

Up the other end we took the lead. A succession of corners was met by Galinski, whose header looked to have been cleared off the line but the assistant referee flagged to say it was over the line and give us our first league goal of the season.

Our lead was short lives though as we failed to clear a free-kick allowing Teague to tap in unmarked from close range. It looked like we would be 2-1 down at the break when Blinkhorn found the back of the net but it was quickly chalked off for a foul on Carr as we went in level at the break.

The start off the second half saw Dave Norris go close before we took the lead. Kane Richards showed some great footwork before Rev James’ low ball in was smashed home by Howes on the line. We continued our good start to the half when Matt Thornhill went through on goal but some last ditch defending denied our captain what would have been a certain goal.

Some good defending from James Clifton then saw us hold onto our lead as a corner looked to be put in by Glenn Steel but our fullback was there to get the ball away before we easily dealt with the next corner.

Our resolute defending continued and was almost rewarded. A Lancaster corner was chipped forward into the path of Rev James and the forward did well to get into the area before seeing an effort blocked. Howes then took over but again his effort was blocked.

Lancaster stepped up their pressure but we continued with our strong defensive performance with Clifton getting in to deny Rhys Turner went through. Carr then threw himself at a shot as the hosts took aim again.

James nearly capped off the win in the last few minutes but his effort was inches wide of the post but it did not matter as we stayed ahead.
