An uneventful first half passed without a shot on target or major incident, with Hutchison going the closest to opening the scoring on 38 minutes, when his shot flew just wide of the visitors’ post, after a good cross from Cory Grantham on the right wing.

Two Sheffield goals on 57 and 70 minutes then put Basford right on the back-foot but a late fightback saw Hutchinson follow-up on his 86th minute penalty to half the deficit, after his initial shot struck the post and the keeper. Despite pushing on for an equaliser into injury time, it was not forthcoming as United slipped to a fourth home league defeat.

Basford now turn their attentions to their debut in the FA Trophy at AFC Rushden & Diamonds on Saturday afternoon, with a 3pm kick-off.
