Jordan Pierrepoint is relishing the opportunity to fight for the number one spot this season following his summer arrival at the club.

The twenty-year-old signed from Heanor Town on a three-year-deal in May and has featured in several pre-season outings despite a previous knee injury, interchanging with lead custodian Kieran Preston as he mounts a challenge for the goalkeeper’s jersey this season.

And after overcoming the injury which side-lined him for three weeks, he admits he can now look forward to the league campaign and cannot wait to finally get underway at the weekend.

“With the injury I sustained, it meant I was not going to get as much playing time as I had hoped in pre-season and with the games I did play, I did not really have a lot to do to stamp my foot on the game” he said.

“Thankfully, the injury was nothing too serious, and I am now excited for the season’s start and the positional challenges that lie in wait.”

Preston is expected to start in the home fixture against Paul Carden’s Warrington Town at Greenwich Avenue on Saturday, but the former Chesterfield youngster has vowed to take his chance whenever he is given the nod.

“Not a lot has been said with regards to my position at the club or what is required, but my job starts now, and I will do my best and try and get that number one shirt from Kieran and keep it.”

The Derbyshire-born ‘keeper excelled in his two seasons at The Town Ground, with manager Steve Chettle convinced he is ready to push Preston all the way and Pierrepoint feels he is certainly ready to tackle the challenges of the Northern Premier League.

“It was a big step up from Heanor, but I felt it was the right time to really test myself in a very competitive league. The pace and physicality of the game is a lot higher at this level and is filled with quality players.

“With the training and pre-season campaign we have had, I feel I am ready should I be needed. Kieran, Graeme ‘Jock’ Rodger (goalkeeping coach), and I have a great relationship between us, and we will certainly challenge one another and progress as a team.

“Everyone at Basford has made me feel so welcome since my arrival and I will always be prepared and ready should my time to play in Kieran’s absence arrive.”

We welcome Warrington Town to Greenwich Avenue on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of Northern Premier League Fixtures, kick off 15:00.
