Honours even as Basford & Stocksbridge end level & Basford now 21 games unbeaten ( VIDEO NOW ON SITE)

Match reporter24 Dec 2017 - 13:09

Whilst the perfect away record of 9 wins out of 9 was ended yesterday this was an excellent point for Basford.

Promotion chasing Stocksbridge Park Steels have the same aspirations as Basford ie an automatic promotion spot, and it was clear to see why as both good teams slugged it out in a fine game yesterday in Yorkshire.
In a game of 2 halves the home side applied a lot of 1st half pressure, 2nd half Basford having weathered the storm went looking for the victory, but overall a draw was a fair result and probably one both sides will be happy with.

Both teams went into the game with the South divisions top 2 goal scoring strikers with Joe Lumsden from Park Steels leading Basford's Liam Hearn by 1 goal. But this game was all about the quality of the respective backlines of both camps who nullified such potent offensive units.
The home side shaded a tight first half, asking serious questions of the Basford defence, who restricted them to one real opening, Brodie Litchfield’s shot being brilliantly tipped wide by Saul Deeney. At the other end James Reid was unlucky with a shot that was blocked.

The second period saw Basford come forward with purpose and Connor Bartle went closest to breaking the deadlock with a volley that looked destined for the net only for Steels keeper David Reay to deny him with a fine save.

Five minutes from time Liam Hearn looked to set to win it for Basford but his shot was blocked and the game ended 0-0.
Great defensive showing yesterday & the clear Man of the match of a very good unit was Kieran Fenton (Headline Photo) who registered a superb performance and without question his best in a Basford shirt..
Basford’s support base is growing by the game and yesterday accounted for almost half of those in attendance yesterday and were vocal throughout. We thank you for your continued support its proving a superb lift for all players & Mgt.
Next up for Basford is a Boxing Day cracker as United entertain local rivals Carlton Town at Greenwich Avenue tomorrow 3pm. It promises to be a great game and Basford will be looking to erase a painful memory of last season’s Notts Senior Cup final defeat, when the visitors inflicted our biggest loss in a long time.

Basford United wishes a very happy Christmas to all who follow our football club either at games or via our various Social Media Accounts have a great festive period and thank you for the continued interest in our club.
