Stalwart leaves after six-and-a-half years...

After six-and-a-half years of service, defender Dom Roma has left the club.

Roma joined United from Scarborough Athletic back in 2017 and was an influential figure in the side that won promotion as champions to the current level with a record 100 points tally in his first season.

He was soon appointed vice-captain and also had a spell as interim coach in 2019, winning the Nottinghamshire Senior Cup at Mansfield Town.

Going on to make over 250 appearances during his time at Greenwich Avenue, Roma made Team of the Decade, as voted for by the fans online, at the end of 2020.

An utmost professional, everyone at Basford United Football Club thanks Dom for his tireless commitment and efforts and wish him and his family all the very best for the future. He will always be welcomed back.

Before his departure, Dom said the following: “It’s been a whirlwind near-seven year stay at the club with plenty of downs, but many more ups! From promotion, winning the Notts Senior Cup and nearly gaining promotion to the National League North, I’ll look back on my time at Basford United very fondly.

I’d like to thank all the coaches and managers that I’ve played for previously – Martin Carruthers, Steve Chettle, Mark Clifford, Steve Kittrick and currently Jeppo – I hope you all thought I was value for money!

I’d also like to say thanks to all the staff in-and-around the club. It’s a place where I’ve made so many friends and it will be sad not seeing familiar faces in the bar after the game anymore.

Finally, I would like to offer a thank you and my gratefulness to Chris Munroe and his family for the support over the years. It’s been much appreciated and I wish you all nothing but success moving forward.

Owner Chris Munroe added: “As owner who sanctioned the signing of Dom back in 2017, this ranks right up there as one of my best ever.

Dom’s support and commitment, not only to me but the club, has been brilliant, and his professionalism and long-standing durability in his twilight playing days has been staggering.

Dom knows the running joke that he can keep going until he is 50, and I truly wish him and his family all the very best and his legacy will forever remain at this great football club.”
