Consistency is key for Callum Chettle.

Consistency is key for Callum Chettle.

Jonny Drake31 May 2020 - 09:00

In an interview with Basford TV, Chettle said playing consistently helped him steady his performances through his first season at Basford.

“I had a spell over the previous two years where one week I would play then the next to be left on the bench," said Chettle, "I also had a few bad loan deals which didn’t go how I wanted them to. I played 34 games out of the 38 available. It's the most football I’ve played in three seasons which is why this season was one of the most enjoyable for me.”

Playing in the heart of Basford United’s midfield with captain Matt Thornhill, Callum Chettle played 34 times out of a possible 38 for Basford last season.

With his first season at Basford going so well Chettle told Basford TV: “I think I was pretty consistent and without blowing my own trumpet, I don’t think I played poorly in any game this season. That comes from consistency with me playing so many games I was able to get to that level.”

For his consistency, Chettle was awarded a new deal before the lockdown ended the season. The midfielder expressed that he was delighted to sign on the dotted line:

“I was one of the lucky ones. I signed it a little bit before everyone else. I was delighted when I signed the contract and I’m delighted now. I can’t wait for the pandemic to be over to get going again.”

Basford United has been growing over the past three seasons, and Chettle said the upward trend in Basford’s fortunes was a reason to stay with the club.

“You’ve got a chairman who knows what he wants and is doing really well with that. The manager I know quite well“ he joked. “It’s a club that’s going in the right direction. I’m glad I’m able to be a part.”

Callum also coaches Basford’s academy alongside Josh Law. He updated Basford TV on the plans for the academy as well as the first team.

“We’ve got a date. We come back to training June 30th and the academy lads will go back July 6th if all goes to plan.

“The academy is looking strong as we had a trail day before the lockdown and recruited around 60 kids for next year to join the lads who are already here. So, yeah really exciting.”

Chettle did have one personal goal for the 2020/21 season: to get his goal.

Chettle hasn’t scored for Basford United yet, with a smile on his face, says improving that area of his game is a target for next season.

“I'd love to break the duct and score. The gaffer got on me a bit towards the end about that. But yeah keep producing goals assists and playing at a top-level.”
