Chettle Reflects on Monday's Defeat to Matlock Town

User 391536521 Aug 2019 - 19:40

Basford United boss Steve Chettle saw his sides defeat to Matlock Town as a “point dropped in the grand scheme of things.”

Pietu Crouz’s stunning free kick in the 84th minute was enough for Town to take all three points, despite Basford creating the better chances for much of the game. A point that has left Chettle scratching his head.

“It was a weird one,” said the boss. “I think the goal they scored was their first shot on target.

“We had specific instructions on how to play. The first half was okay. We created opportunities and their ‘keeper made some good saves.”

“The second half got a bit scrappy; we didn’t create enough chances to win the game. Then they have some magic from a free kick, and we lose 1-0

“We dropped a point that we probably deserved, and my thoughts are how have I not got a point out of that game.

“He acknowledges his attentions must now turn to Saturday’s visit of Lancaster City as he aims to avoid back to back defeats.

“Today’s game is gone,” he said. “There is nothing we can do about it now.

“We will reflect and hopefully learn from it.

“But we will concentrate on Saturday’s game in training on Thursday night and work on the scout report we get back from Lancaster.”

Kick off at Greenwich Avenue against Lancaster City on Saturday is at 3:00pm.
