Chesterfield 5 Basford United 1

Basford United suffered a 5-1 defeat to a clinical Chesterfield side in the first round of the FA Trophy at The Proact Stadium on Saturday.

The National League side proved to be too strong for Basford, dominating the first 70 minutes and giving away few chances. Two first half goals from Andrew Kiwomya and Tom Denton had the hosts in a strong position at halftime. Three goals in eight minutes from Jonathan Smith, Lee Shaw and Denton in the second half confirmed the result and knocked Basford out of the FA Trophy at the first-round stage.
Both teams started brightly with each playing to win. Kiwomya opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a powerful strike from 12 yards after the Basford defence allowed him to turn in the box.
20 minutes later Tom Denton doubled the lead for The Spireites, stooping low to head under Basford keeper Kieran Preston from 3 yards after the ball came off the bar.
As halftime approached Chesterfield hit the bar again from Haydon Hollis’ header, whereas Basford’s best chance had come from James Reid’s long range shot which was dragged wide.
Chesterfield came out hungry in the second half and three goals in eight minutes sealed the victory. First, captain Jonathan Smith fired a low, long range shot into the bottom left corner of Preston’s goal before Lee Shaw fired a powerful shot into the top right corner following a terrific solo run. The final goal came from Denton who bagged his second of the game with a simple tap in from substitute Ify Ofoegbu’s cross.
Youngster Zak Goodson pulled one back for Basford with a powerful shot from 18 yards, beating Callum Burton at his near post to give the away fans something to cheer with 15 minutes to go.
But despite the chants of “we’re going to win 6-5” Basford were condemned to defeat. Manager Martin Carruthers said: “I’m very proud of the players, we could’ve had a couple more as Deon went close and we hit the bar from Bates [Liam Bateman] so credit to them for still fighting”.
Basford travel to top of the table Nantwich Town on Saturday 22nd (3.0) and will hope to get back to winning ways.
