With both sides keen to get some game time under the belts after the recent enforced winter break then both camps would have been happy with the workout,.United won a close game by 2-1 with goals from Theo Smith and Martin Carruthers although the object was not the result but the chance to regain levels of match fitness in both camps. Basford Manager Daz Saunders was very happy with the 1st 60 minutes as both team moved the ball about really well. Understandably legs tired going into the latter stages on a heavy surface but a very beneficial workout. The only downer on the evening was a groin injury sustained by Willis Francis in the pregame warm up that could see him on the sideline for a few weeks. The injury left us a little low on numbers for the evening but at least it provided the opportunity for heavy minutes for all involved.
As fate has it Basford are the odd team out in the EMCL round of weekend fixtures. Rather than be inactive United have found Arnold Town in the same situation so a friendly will take place Sat between the sides 3pm kick off at Greenwich Avenue. The players who were not available last night Ash Dyce, Martin Holt,Wayne Jones and Dan Jackson should come back into Saturdays squad. Additionally United want to run the eye over youngster Joe Brothwell who is in the process of signing for the club from Arnold for which the tall 17 year old looks a very good prospect.
The chance to play higner ranking teams like Dunkirk and Arnold at this stage of this season is very important for us at this time.
Delighted to see United current and Ex Dunkirk midfielder Daz Garmston at the game last night as an on looker. Gamo is now 1 month into his recovery from a major knee ligament and cartledge operation and looks in high spirits. The operation has been a success so Gamo is now at physio but making good progress, and is on course to be back on the football field for the start of the new season. We wish him all the best in his recovery and it gives a lift seeing him back on a match day.
Finally a hastily switched game sees Basford Under 19s now reversing tonights scheduled away fixture v Ollerton to Greenwich Avenue 7.45pm kick off to get this game played. This game is a big one for Wane Scott and Steve Hawley Under 19s as both teams are in a pack of clubs in the hunt for honours in the Baris Heath Under 19 league.
