Basford United thrash Ilkeston Town 7-1 while simultaneously raising around £1200 for the injured Malachi Lavelle-Moore.

Firstly, everyone at Basford United would like to thank all those who attended today’s game and donated to help Malachi.

Basford started brightly and were two goals up by the 20th minute thanks to Liam Hearn and Kane Richards. Elliot Reeves pulled one back for Ilkeston and Hearn converted a penalty all before half-time.

Courey Grantham netted Basford’s fourth and fifth before Conor Green made it six just seconds later. James Carvell headed in the seventh goal for the home side right at the death.

Basford started on the front foot and it wasn’t long before they took the lead. New signing Richards broke clear of the Ilkeston defence and squared the ball for Hearn to slide home with just 15 minutes gone.

This set the pace of the game as Richards doubled the lead less than two minutes later with a cool finish, taking the ball past Brandon Ganley before side-footing home.

Ilkeston did not let their heads drop and managed to pull one back with ten first-half minutes left thanks to Reeves. The Town striker showed good strength and cut inside, firing a heavily deflected shot past Kieran Preston in the Basford net.

Once again, the next goal came just two minutes later as Basford reinstated their two-goal cushion after Brad Gascoigne was fouled in the box following a corner. Hearn stepped up and converted to make it 3-1 to the home side.

Just before halftime, Ganley pulled off a magnificent save to deny Zak Goodson from point-blank range, the ball rebounding to James Reid whose shot was blocked.

Both sides had chances early into the second half. Kev Batso fired over for the visitors before Hearn’s powerful strike was kept out by substitute Richard Stainsby.

Basford made eight changes on the hour mark which did little to disrupt the rhythm of the home side and it was not long before Jack Thomas set through Grantham who grabbed the fourth goal for United.

Two 82nd minute goals from Grantham and trialist Green made it 6-1 to Basford before Carvell found himself in the right place to head home at the death, sealing Ilkeston’s fate.
