Basford maintain 100% home record

Basford maintain 100% home record

Neil McGowan8 Dec 2012 - 16:16

Basford United made it nine wins out out of nine home games in the East Midlands Counties League with a 3-0 victory over Holwell Sports.

This was a solid, rather than spectacular display by Basford against opponents who played eighty minutes with ten men after a last man infingement on Cashel Walters that saw a red card for the defender and a penalty award. Martin Carruthers confidently stepped up to score from the spot and open the scoring in the tenth minute.

Basford took the game to the ten men but were frustrated by a combination of good defending and inspired goalkeeping from Holwell keeper Richard Cragg.

Nine minutes into the second period Basford doubled their lead after Theo Smith's shot took a wicked deflection to wrong foot Cragg. On the hour Carruthers made it three after a fluent move pierced the visiting defensive line leaving him space to score with a well placed shot.

With fifteen minutes remaining Holwell were awarded a penalty following a foul but Dom Hallows' shot came back off the upright and was scrambled clear.

The win keeps the team in touch with leaders Barrow Town, seven points behind with a game in hand. Blaby and Whetstone are third, nine points behind Basford with two games in hand. They are also the next opponents, at Blaby next Saturday.

Basford team: Barker, Harrison, Moore, Dyce, Holt, Francis, Hastings, F.Smith, Carruthers, Walters, Brady.
Subs: Davis, Westcarr, T.Smith, Jackson, Jones.
