Basford beaten at Hednesford

Basford beaten at Hednesford

Neil McGowan19 Jan 2019 - 17:53

Basford United’s poor run continued as they lost 3-1 at Hednesford Town, the home side scoring twice in the second half after an even first period.

There was just one change to the side that lost to South Shields last week, Nat Watson restored to the starting line up with Jack Thomas dropping to the bench.

It was the worst possible start for Basford with the home side taking the lead after just four minutes. Ben Bailey’s long throw was helped on by Reece King and Shane Benjamin gave Saul Deeney no chance from close range.

The side wasted little time in levelling, although there was a touch of good fortune about the goal. Nine minutes in Matt Thornhill surged forward and fed James Reid, whose shot took a wicked deflection to loop over Hednesford keeper Mate Deczki.

Deeney got down well to save from Jud Ellis’ low shot, and then almost turned provider, his long clearance finding its way to Dan Creaney who put his shot over.

Shaun Harrad went close in the 34th minute but pulled his shot wide.

There was a let off for Basford five minutes from the break as Bailey found himself in space from a corner, but his header flashed wide.

In a repeat of the first half opening, Hednesford retook the lead four minutes into the second period.
Benjamin’s through ball found Ellis who shot found the corner of the net.

Unlike the first half there was to be no comeback by Basford as the home team upped the pressure, Benjamin shooting wide and on 64 minutes Ellis scored his second of the day, finding the top corner of the net with a shot from the edge of the box.

Basford came back and pinned the home side in their half without troubling Deczki.

Former Basford favourite Kieran Wells was up front for Hednesford and made his presence felt, winning a number of free kicks around the box in dangerous positions.

Courey Grantham was looking sharp in his first appearance after injury and he saw a shot fly narrowly wide ten minutes from time.
