Uniteds debut boy central defender Jack Davis lasted 9 minutes in the game before being given a straight red for a deemed last man infringement.United keeper Curtis MacDonald made a superb pen save from the resulting penalty taken by Nathan Robinson. Martin Carruthers was without question the hero of the day as the striker was asked to drop back in at centre half after the dismissal and not only put in an excellent defensive display but also helped himself to 3 goals from set plays. Basfords other debut boy Dan Jackson also totally justified his selection with not only a fine display but also a sublime looping header to register his 1st Basford goal.Jarrod Westcarr returning from injury also registered a cool finish off the bench to seal the victory.
After the 9th minute dismisal of Jack that looked a little harsh given Ashley Dyce looked well placed to cover, Basford showed a great response to power ahead on 11 minutes. Martin Carruthers rose majestically to plant home a fine header past ex United keeper Andy Fretwell.Despite United having some gilt edge opportiunities to increase the advantage, Greenwood drew level on 30 min as Jeffreys broke clear to keep his cool and roll home for 1-1.Within a minute a perfect Basford response saw Willis Francis fouled just inside the box and Martin Carruthers cooly sending Fretwell the wrong way for 2-1.United added a 3rd on 39 min as the impressive youngster Dan Jackson latched onto a fine cross to loop a superb header over Fretwell.United though were finding it really difficult to repel a very offensive ,who utilised the extra man to very good affect.Just before the break Jack Hopper was given far too much time in the box to cut inside a pick his spot for 3-2.
Second period Basford had a hugh letoff not once but twice inside the 1st minute of the second period as firstly a flowing Meadows move say a thunderbolt come back off the bar followed by inspired goalline defending on not once but two occassions to repel another attack.United gained a cushion on 55 min as Carruthers expertly headed home a precise Fabian Smith free kick.The visitors still had a foothold in the game and the cross bar came to Basfords rescue once again. On 79 minutes the game was made safe as substitute Jarrod Westcarr returning from injury kept his cool to roll a one on one past Fretwell.Sub Courtney Hastings was a whisker from a goal as a goalbound effort hit the post and trickled along the line. But all in all great spirit from the lads today to secure this victory after playing so long with 10 men.
Theo Smith totally justifed the decision to start him up top with a hard working display especially when leading the line on his own.
