Barren run ends at North Ferriby

Barren run ends at North Ferriby

Neil McGowan27 Jan 2019 - 16:18

Basford United ended their run of league defeats with a hard fought, but deserved, 2-1 win at North Ferriby United.

In difficult conditions, with a strong wind and against determined opponents, it was not easy but Basford produced the goods when it mattered.

There were two changes to the side that lost at Hednesford last week, Fernando Bell-Toxtle making his first league start since returning from a loan spell at Grantham and Jack Thomas restored to the starting eleven. James Reid dropped to the bench and there was no place for Dan Creaney.

Liam Hearn made his long awaited return to the first team scene on the bench.

Playing into the wind in the first half, Basford took a fifth minute lead, Lewis Carr heading in from Matt Thornhill's corner.

The impressive Nat Watson went close went close with a shot, but there was little in the way of goalmouth action, the wind making constructive play difficult.

The wind played a part in the North Ferriby’s equaliser eight minutes from the break, Jordan Windass’s corner eluding the defence to go straight in.

Watson then saw what seemed to be a goal bound header brilliantly tipped over by home keeper Lewis Exell.

The second half saw Basford, intelligently using the wind at their backs, upping the pressure. Thornhill hit the post, Watson putting the rebound wide.

Watson had his reward for a fine performance on 62 minutes, when he headed in another Thornhill corner (pictured).

North Ferriby went close when Jack Mail headed against the bar, but were reduced to ten men with eleven minutes remaining, Leon Smith receiving his second yellow card of the day.

On as substitute, Hearn looked certain to add a third goal, but was pulled back for a late offside flag.

Basford: Saul Deeney, Liam Bateman, Dom Roma, Jerry Nash, Lewis Carr, Stef Galinski, Fernando Bell-Toxtle, Matt Thornhill, Nat Watson, Shaun Harrad (Liam Hearn 68), Jack Thomas.
Subs not used: Courey Grantham, James Reid, Zak Goodson, Dennel Stokes.

Attendance: 186.
