Basford United is delighted to announce the signing of Tanzanian international Ben Starkie, as the news out of the first team camp continues to better.
A highly touted midfielder, he has turned heads since his arrival at the start of pre-season and carries bags of potential, signing a two-year deal with the club who fought off significant competition from the National League upwards for his signature.
Starkie made his debut for the East African nation earlier this year, playing 45 minutes in a 3-1 friendly win over Central African Republic.
He has represented his national side from U17 level and has been twice an unused substitute in recent African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Niger and Algeria.
The 19-year-old has also played in Germany and was most recently of Spalding United, where he was awarded young player of the season last year after registering ten goals.
Manager Mark Clifford said: “Ben is another signing that we’re delighted to get over the line this week.
“He’s been a pleasure to watch during the first week of pre-season - and gaining his signature has been a challenge - but I’m confident this will be a great move for him and a great addition to the first team squad.
“He is at the right age and shows great hunger to succeed, as well as showing maturity beyond his years with the ball.”
Starkie may be in contention to feature in tonight’s pre-season fixture with Notts County at Greenwich Avenue (19.45).
