The hosts took the lead through Reece Robins’ strike. We were immediately level though as Wayde Hines added to his first team goal on Saturday from the penalty spot. And after Will Tams had been shown a straight red Hines fired in to make it 2-1 at the break.
We were on the counter for most of the second half and Lewis Rourke smashed in a third with 11 minutes left before Rory Harrison scored directly from a corner to make it four and book our placein the second round of the FA Youth Cup.
We almost took the lead with little over 90 seconds on the clock. Jordan Haywood’s cross was straight up in the ait but dipped down on Vale ‘keeper Tom Gregors who almost turned the ball into his own net before a defender cleared it off the line.
Up the other end Gianni Musson did well to save from Eden Bailey after Robins had forced our number one into a routine save.
We then had a couple of chances of our own as both sides settled into the game. George Sharman looped an effort over the bar before Kiarne Nyemba was sent through on goal and drew a good stop from Gregors.
But we then fell behind on 17 minutes. A mix up at the back allowed the ball to be put into the path of Robins who slotted home from inside the area. That was a short-lived lead though as we struck back instantly. Hines twisted and turned his way into the area before being fouled. He then stepped to fire home the spot kick.
A combination of Musson and Callum Frogson then kept us on level terms as the hosts looked to move back into the lead. Their pressure continued as Sharman was forced into a last-ditch tackle.
Up the other end Nathaniel Peters headed just over before we took the lead. Hines did well to get ahead of Tams, who fouled him and was shown a straight red for his troubles. That left our captain to smash the free-kick low and into the back of the net to double our lead at the break.
Despite being down to 10 men the hosts forced the issue in the second half but failed to call Musson into action. In fact, the only thing our number one had to do was smash a loose ball back up field, that was after Sharman had done the same a few moments earlier.
On the counter we looked dangerous as substitute Lewis Rourke had a shot blocked and minutes later he played in Haywood who won a corner that was cleared off the line.
We did have a deserved third on 79 minutes. Rory Harrison saw an effort blocked and it dropped to Rourke who smashed the ball into the top corner. It was almost four just a minute later as Hines fired inches wide of the post. We then went even closer as Newell struck the bar from a free-kick and somehow Frogson could not turn home the rebound.
We did get a fourth with two minutes on the clock as Harrison fired straight in a corner to confirm our place in the 2nd round of the FA Youth Cup.
