In breaking news that will no doubt delight everyone connected to Basford United, The Gandiman is set to return for the 2025/26 season in a senior first-team role, this time off the pitch. Martin Carruthers will take on the position of Head of Football, where he will support and guide all aspects of our first team setup. Working closely on recruitment, retention, and mentoring Willis and his coaching staff, this appointment feels like a perfect fit.
Having already enjoyed two highly successful spells with the club, Martin’s return is a significant boost as Basford United looks ahead with ambition and renewed focus.
Basford United Owner Chris Munroe commented:
"I’m delighted we’ve managed to sell our vision for the next three years and entice Gandi back. I think this is a great role for Martin, and also for Willis and his management team, who can now tap into Martin’s vast experience and knowledge at Step 3/4 level. Martin brought Willis to Basford as a player back in 2013 and they’re good friends. Not many fans will forget Martin led Basford to promotion from Step 4 in 2017-18 with over 100 points and 100 goals, hopefully we can enjoy more of the same in the future."
Commenting on his return, The Gandiman said:
"It’s great to be back at Basford and after some time out and feeling refreshed, this is a great opportunity for me in a new role. When Chris got in touch to discuss it, I had no hesitation in arranging to meet. Willis has been a good friend for many years, and this role will enable me to support him with my knowledge and experience, and give him the best opportunity to be successful and bring the good times back to the club. It’s a chance to rebuild and create a positive, family atmosphere and put a smile back on the faces of our supporters. There’s a lot of hard work ahead, but with us all working together, this was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I’m excited and looking forward to this new challenge."
The club and ownership can also confirm that Paul Cox and John Ramshaw will not be retained for the 2025/26 season.
Chris Munroe added:
"Thank you to both Paul and John for their short time at Basford. Unfortunately, we didn’t achieve our late objective of staying up, and we’ve now decided to build the above support structure around Willis. We wish both Paul and John the very best for the future and thank them for their efforts with Basford United FC."
