Tough night at the office for United...

BY CALLUM ALTIMAS

United fell to their second defeat of the season as Nuneaton Borough ran home 4-0 winners at Greenwich Avenue on Tuesday night.

First half goals from Isaiah Osbourne and Kane Richards saw 'Boro head into the break 2-0 up before later strikes from Ryan Beswick and Tyrell Waite sealed the result for the visitors.

Nuneaton got off to a bright start, conjuring up numerous chances in the opening minutes. Matthew Stenson had the first chance, but his effort from a tight angle was excellently saved by Kieran Preston.

Next up, Charlie Dowd showed excellent skill, winning the ball outside the Basford area, before dribbling into the box and firing his effort into the side netting.

The Ambers weren’t without chances of their own, though, and Greg Smith almost found an opener when his delicate chip beat Tony Breeden in the away goal, but clipped the crossbar.

Nuneaton came close again when Camron McWilliams hit a fierce effort from inside the home area, but Preston was again on hand to deny him with a superb save.

The visitors eventually found the opener they’d been pressing hard for; captain Osbourne got on end of a corner to head past Preston unmarked.

Almost immediately afterwards, Basford had a glorious opportunity to find an equaliser when Ben Starkie drilled a ball across the face of the Nuneaton goal, but there was no one there to get on the end of it.

‘Boro made them pay minutes later when former Basford man Richards was played through on goal and slotted beyond Preston to make it two.

Clifford’s men thought they had a penalty when the ball seemed to strike the arm of a Nuneaton man and the referee pointed to the spot, but the decision was overturned after a stoppage of play and a consultation with his linesman.

Rallying, United started the second half much brighter, and a smart free kick found Anthony Dwyer just wide of the goal, but his cross into the six-yard area was cleared over for a corner.

The home side pushed hard for a goal, but couldn’t quite find an opening.

Matthew Stenson had a glorious opportunity to score, after he cut a dazzling run through the defence, but his effort struck the outside of the post.

The visitors scored a third shortly after, when Beswick fired a free kick from just outside the area into the back of the net.

With just over five minutes left of the game, Nuneaton added a fourth, when Waite struck home from six yards out.

Next up for Basford is a trip Hitchin Town on Saturday (3pm).
