Silkmen too strong for United...

BY MAX STAIRS

Basford United fell to high flying Macclesfield 3-1 at Greenwich Avenue in a massive blow to survival hopes, having lead in the tie.

United had their first shot on target in the 17th minute through a delightful ball into the box by Henri Wilder, it found the head of Remaye Campbell, but his effort landed safely into the hands of Ollie Byrne.

The visitors had dominated possession, until Kieron Fenton took aim from 35 yards as his effort worried Bryne but whistled just past the post.

The visitors really put the pressure on for the remaining half, but the Ambers managed to hold off Macclesfield pressure and go into halftime at 0-0.

The visitors came out for the second half swinging as Luke Duffy received a ball from a cutback which forced Kieran Preston into making a fabulous save to deny the visitors the first goal of the contest.

United fired back with an amazing chance to go up, as Matty Thornhill laid it off to Kane Richards who’s effort was palmed to safety by Bryne.

The Ambers were the team to draw first blood as in the 67th minute Toby Ritzema hit a stunner from 35 yards out which nestled into the top corner.

But the visitors were quick to reply, as Luke Duffy, who had missed a handful of chances already, slotted the ball into the back of the net to bring the tie back level.

An unlucky miscommunication at the back saw the Silkmen capitalise in the 84th minute as they took the lead for the first time in the tie through Babatunde Owolabi.

The visitors sealed the tie in the 90th minute through the substitute Babatunde Owolabi scored his second of the afternoon.

The final whistle blew on a disappointing afternoon, as the Ambers fell to Macclesfield 3-1 at Greenwich Avenue.
